An undergraduate education leaves an impact on students, but for many Stormy Petrels, leaving a legacy behind at Oglethorpe is also important.
The Class of 2019 launched its senior class gift campaign last month with the goal of giving back to students in need—and having every member of the senior class contribute.
“It’s been an important tradition for seniors to give back to the campus that has given us so much,” said Student Government Association Vice President Haley Evans ’19. “Oglethorpe teaches us the value of service and community engagement, and I’m excited to participate in a campaign that reinforces helping others.”
This year’s senior gift aims to help students to stay enrolled in school, and will benefit students applying to the Student Emergency Assistance Fund, as well as DACA students who are not eligible for federal or state financial aid. SEAF helps any student who may be at the tipping point of dropping out. It’s a safety net to help pay for food, books, rent, utilities, and other living expenses, so students can stay focused on their classes and staying in school.
“Since being at Oglethorpe, I’ve had friends share their concerns about accessibility to funding for school because of their status,” said Deon Heavens ’19, senior class president. “Campaign funds we raise will aid students who are DACA or undocumented, and those who are just struggling financially. We want to help them achieve their goals one step at a time.”
The Senior Class Gift Campaign is open through May 14, 2019. Those who are not members of the Class of ’19 are also able to make contributions via matching gifts.
